Sustainable, Aesthetic, and Retail Ready → No Need to Compromise
My favorite part about sustainability is that there are several ways one can tackle it. For me, sustainability comes down to adding classic pieces in my closet, so that I can get as many uses out of a garment. Hence, for my zero waste design, I wanted to create a retail ready piece that can be easily integrated into thousands of closets.
The success of my piece stems from the fact that one would not be able to tell it is a zero waste design until looking at the pattern.
Design Process
- I started by adding in the rectangle of the fabric I had for this project after washing and drying to accommodate for shrinkage
- The dimension I got was 57.75 inches by 73 inches
- I dropped the shoulder so that the sleeve head would fit into the shirttail hem of the dress.
- I added in the necessary design elements, like button bands and collars.
- From there I was able to determine the length of dress I would be able to make
- I had additional space so I played around and came up with an interesting front yoke design, pocket, pocket flap, and belt loops to hold the sash in place
Original Weight of Fabric = 38.5 oz
